Professor Evthymios Papataxiarchis is a distinguished academic at the Department of Social Anthropology and History, University of the Aegean. With a PhD from the London School of Economics and a law degree from the University of Athens, he has been pivotal in establishing Greece’s first Department of Social Anthropology. His research spans gender, kinship, migration, and historical anthropology, informed by fieldwork in Aegean Greece and the refugee crisis on Lesbos.
- Education: BSc (Econ.) in Social Anthropology (First Class Honours, 1978), PhD (1988) from LSE; Law graduate from the University of Athens.
- Leadership: Directed the Postgraduate Program ‘Social and Historical Anthropology’ (2000–2019), served as Department President and Senate member (2002–2005), and leads the Laboratory of Ethnography.
- Research: Focuses on Ottoman Western Anatolia during the Tanzimat, humanitarian governance, and the socio-spatial impact of the refugee crisis.
- Awards & Affiliations: Honorary positions at UCL, founding member of EASA, and editorial roles in prominent journals.
