Kostas Giannakopoulos

Professor Kostas Giannakopoulos holds a position in the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of the Aegean. He specializes in the Social and Historical Anthropology of Gender, with a focus on gender studies, sexuality, and kinship. Giannakopoulos earned his doctorate from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris) in 1995, researching masculine identity among football players and homosexual men in Athens. He has held visiting professorships at Stockholm University, Gothenburg University, and his alma mater. As director of the Postgraduate Diploma in Gender, Culture, and Society, he teaches courses on gender theories, urban anthropology, and anthropological theory.

His research explores intersections of gender, sexuality, nationalism, and urban space. Key themes include queer theory, the social construction of AIDS, and historical analyses of Greek male homosexuality. He has published extensively on topics like kinship dynamics, emotional studies, and spatial politics in cities like Athens. Giannakopoulos is affiliated with the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA) and contributes to interdisciplinary collaborations between anthropology and psychoanalysis.

His recent work since 2014 focuses on archival and ethnographic studies of male homosexuality in post-war Greece, examining how historical policies and cultural norms shape contemporary identities. He co-directs research labs like the Ethnography Laboratory and collaborates on projects involving spatial contestation and multiculturalism in urban environments.

Teaching responsibilities include core courses such as Theories of Gender and Anthropology of Urban Space. His academic trajectory reflects a commitment to critical theory, historical materialism, and the politicization of everyday life through anthropological inquiry.
