Jérôme COURDURIÈS is a University Professor and the director of LISST (Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Solidarity, Societies, Territories) at the University of Toulouse Jean Jaurès. He is affiliated with the Anthropology Department where he teaches various courses devoted to the history of the discipline, the anthropology of kinship, the anthropology of gender, the ethnographic method, and epistemology at undergraduate and graduate levels.
Professor COURDURIÈS holds multiple significant positions: Member of Section 38 "Anthropology and Comparative Study of Contemporary Societies" of the CoNRS (2021-2025), Member and President of the CSQ of Section 20 at UT2J since November 2024, Project Manager for Gender Equality and the Fight against Sexual and Sexist Violence since September 2023, and member of the ANR NorPro program coordinated by Anne-Sophie Giraud (2023-2026).
His research focuses on the anthropology of kinship, gender, and the body. Initially working on male homosexual conjugality, he expanded to examine how homosexuality affects kinship experiences. His recent scholarship centers on how assisted reproductive technologies (particularly surrogacy) transform kinship relationships and how civil registry offices and judges handle trans people's requests to modify sex markers on birth certificates. He explores the role of the body, biological knowledge, law, and legal practices in creating kinship ties, gender identities, and conceptions of personhood.
COURDURIÈS' scholarly output demonstrates consistent evolution from LGBTQ+ family structures toward increasingly complex intersections of reproductive technologies, legal systems, and gender identity. His recent work reveals deepening engagement with trans issues within French legal frameworks, showing how anthropological perspectives can illuminate the tensions between personal identity and bureaucratic systems. The interdisciplinary nature of his research bridges anthropology with law, gender studies, and sociology.
As director of LISST, Professor COURDURIÈS leads an interdisciplinary research laboratory focused on solidarity, societies, and territories. His leadership extends to practical applications through his gender equality initiative, translating academic insights into institutional policies against sexual and sexist violence. His editorial work on special journal issues demonstrates his role in shaping scholarly discourse in his fields of expertise.
