Pamela Patton is a Professor of Art & Archaeology and Director of the Index of Medieval Art at Princeton University. Her research focuses on the visual culture of medieval Iberia, particularly the role of images in shaping cultural identity and social dynamics among multiethnic communities. She holds a Ph.D. from Boston University (1994).
Patton’s work explores medieval iconography as a lens for understanding community ideologies. Her notable publications include *Art of Estrangement: Redefining Jews in Reconquest Spain* (2012), winner of the Eleanor Tufts Book Award, and *Pictorial Narrative in the Romanesque Cloister* (2004). She has held fellowships from the Kress Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Spanish Ministry of Culture.
Current research examines intersections of color, race, and visual traditions in medieval Iberia, alongside studies of improvisation in manuscripts of King Alfonso X. She co-edits *Studies in Iconography* and serves as series editor for *Signa: Papers of the Index of Medieval Art*.
Her teaching emphasizes multiculturalism, artistic exchange in the medieval Mediterranean, and race and identity in the Middle Ages. Grants and awards reflect sustained scholarly impact in medieval art history.
