Catherine Fernandez is an Art History Specialist affiliated with Princeton University's Art & Archaeology department and the Index of Medieval Art. She holds a Ph.D. from Emory University (2012) and joined the Index in 2013. Her research focuses on Western medieval art, particularly church treasuries, antique gem afterlives, Romanesque sculpture, and cross-cultural exchanges in the medieval Mediterranean.
Education: Ph.D. in Art History from Emory University (2012).
Current research includes a book manuscript titled Charlemagne’s Pectoral: The Medieval Afterlife of the Gemma Augustea at Saint-Sernin of Toulouse, examining the cultural trajectory of a Roman cameo. She also investigates the Godescalc Gospel Lectionary’s role at Saint-Sernin and correlations between Romanesque altar placement and capital iconography. Her work bridges art history with material culture analysis.
Previously taught at Emory University and Georgia State University, and worked at Emory’s Stuart A. Rose Manuscript Library.
