Elizabeth Woodward

Elizabeth Woodward is an Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Art and Design at the Rueff School of Design, Art, and Performance, Purdue University, with affiliation to the Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts program. Her expertise centers on European medieval art and architectural history.

Dr. Woodward's research investigates material culture of medieval romance, particularly illuminated vernacular manuscripts and intersections between artistic and literary practices in the later Middle Ages. Her teaching spans early/late medieval art, Romanesque and Gothic architecture, Islamic world arts, global Middle Ages exchanges, book arts, art historical methodologies, and afterlife representations. Scholarly output demonstrates consistent focus on manuscript illumination iconography and cross-cultural artistic dialogues during the medieval period, with particular attention to French vernacular traditions. Research funding from the University of Chicago and Mellon Council on Library & Information Resources supports her investigations into visual-textual relationships.
