Kamau A. Patton is an Associate Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), specializing in interdisciplinary art and education. His work bridges archives, soundscapes, and cultural narratives, often exploring themes of time, voids, and intermedia practices. Patton is affiliated with the Visual and Critical Studies department and teaches advanced courses on archival sampling, psychoacoustics, and conceptual art.
Patton holds an MFA from Stanford University (2007) and a Sociology degree from the University of Pennsylvania. His research engages with sonic utopias, computational media, and the politics of cultural preservation. Notable projects include collaborations with institutions like the Tang Teaching Museum, the Creative Audio Archive at Experimental Sound Studio, and the Pulitzer Arts Foundation.
His current interests include the ideological construction of space, trans-disciplinary methodologies, and the ethics of cultural appropriation in art. Recent exhibitions include a solo show at San Jose State University (2022) and a performance at MoMA (2023). Patton’s practice also incorporates residencies, such as his 2020 roles at Coaxial Arts Foundation and Experimental Sound Studio.
