Osvaldo Fonseca is a Researcher at the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health, Umeå University. His work focuses on epidemiological research, particularly the impact of weather and climate change on human health, spatial modeling of disease distribution, and applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). He has led studies on risk factors for severe outcomes in COVID-19 patients and the effectiveness of public health interventions during the pandemic.
Since 2006, he has contributed to epidemiological research across multiple regions, including Sweden, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Cuba. His current projects include analyzing the health impacts of weather types in Sweden amid climatic and demographic changes (2018–2022). He collaborates with the Anne-Marie Fors Connolly Lab and has published extensively on topics ranging from zoonotic pathogens to healthcare inequities.
His research trends emphasize interdisciplinary approaches, combining statistical analysis with spatial epidemiology to address public health challenges. Notable contributions include studies on occupational risks among healthcare workers during the pandemic, geographical inequities in healthcare access, and the long-term cardiovascular effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection.
