Miguel San Sebastian is a Professor in Public Health at the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health, Umeå University. He holds a MSc in Control of Infectious Diseases and a PhD in Environmental Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. His career includes 12 years practicing public health among indigenous communities in Ecuador's Amazon basin.
Research interests focus on socioeconomic inequalities in health, health systems strengthening in low-income countries, and equity in healthcare access. He leads projects such as the Norrland’s Observatory for Equity in Health and Health Care and Lávvuo: Research and Education for Sámi Health. Key areas include Indigenous health (particularly Sámi communities in Sweden and Ecuador), mental health equity, and policy analysis in global health systems.
Recent work includes evaluating health system reforms in Tanzania, analyzing pandemic policies in Sudan and Bolivia, and studying social determinants of health in Mauritius. His publications address topics like healthcare governance, gender equity interventions, and discrimination's impact on Indigenous mental health.
Miguel oversees grants focused on youth mental health in Cambodia, dental care disparities among Sámi populations, and participatory action research on health facility governance in Tanzania. He has advised numerous studies on health equity, including projects funded by international health organizations.
