Gunnar Malmberg is a Professor of Human Geography at the Department of Geography, Umeå University, and holds an affiliation with the Centre for Demographic and Aging Research (CEDAR). His research focuses on migration patterns, population ageing, and family geography, with a regional emphasis on Sweden and Europe. He leads key projects such as Nearness of family, SHARE-Sweden, and SHARE-COVID-19, examining topics like geographic proximity in caregiving, pandemic impacts on daily activities, and intergenerational relationships.
His research integrates demographic analysis with geographic frameworks, addressing questions about social mobility, health outcomes, and regional development. Key outputs include studies on family proximity trends, pandemic-induced behavioral changes, and socioeconomic factors influencing migration and mortality.
Current and past projects include examining multigenerational ties, income inequality effects on health, and boomerang migration behaviors. Collaborations span institutions across Europe, leveraging large datasets like the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE).
His work bridges demographic science with policy-relevant insights, particularly in aging populations and urban-rural dynamics. Ongoing projects explore cognitive consequences of social frailty and health disparities in aging cohorts.
