Jenny Olofsson serves as a Research Fellow at Umeå University's Centre for Demographic and Aging Research (CEDAR), focusing on ageing populations through the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). Her work examines living conditions, family networks, and subjective age determinants among elderly Europeans, with particular emphasis on Swedish and Nordic contexts.
Her research program integrates demographic analysis of family support systems with pandemic impact studies, investigating how events like COVID-19 affect daily activities and mental health of older adults. Earlier work explores East European migration patterns to Sweden, examining integration processes, return migration, and social network formation among immigrant communities. Current projects analyze geographical proximity of adult children to elderly parents and cross-national pandemic responses.
Recent publications (2020-2025) demonstrate consistent focus on SHARE survey applications, revealing pandemic-induced behavioral changes across European ageing populations while highlighting Nordic policy contrasts. Earlier scholarship establishes foundational work on migration dynamics and boomerang behaviors among young Swedes, creating longitudinal continuity in her demographic research agenda.
Dr. Olofsson leads multiple European-funded initiatives including the SHARE project (2023-2027), a study on family proximity and elderly support (2021-2024), and prior research on elderly migrants' living conditions (2016-2021), demonstrating sustained grant acquisition capacity through European research frameworks.
As a core CEDAR researcher, she collaborates extensively with the SHARE network across 30+ European countries, contributing to one of the continent's largest longitudinal ageing studies while maintaining strong institutional ties to Umeå University's demographic research infrastructure.
