Lena Karlsson is an Associate Professor in Sociology and Senior Lecturer at Umeå University's Department of Sociology, serving as Head of the Centre for Demographic and Ageing Research (CEDAR) and Director of CEDAR. Her work focuses on historical demography, climate impacts on health, and social inequalities, with particular attention to indigenous populations like the Sami. She holds a Docent research qualification and is based at Umeå University's Beteendevetarhuset campus.
Research interests include infant mortality trends, seasonal and environmental influences on health outcomes, and demographic transitions. Her studies often compare Sami and non-Sami populations across historical contexts. Key topics include socioeconomic disparities in climate vulnerability, living-apart-together partnerships in modern Sweden, and the interplay between education and living arrangements across Europe.
Collaborative efforts involve interdisciplinary teams investigating weather extremes' effects on perinatal mortality and historical health disparities. Her 2018–2021 project explored climate's role in infant mortality during Sweden's demographic transition. CEDAR serves as a hub for demographic and aging research, reflecting her leadership in advancing population studies.
