Per Axelsson is an Associate Professor in History at Umeå University's Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, with active affiliations at the Centre for Demographic and Aging Research (CEDAR) and Várdduo-Centre for Sámi Research. He serves as a teacher representative on Umeå University's board and as a scientific member of the Swedish Ethical Review Authority.
His research focuses on Sámi health, medical history, and Indigenous research, with specific expertise in polio epidemics and population statistics. Key areas include:
