Venezuelan-born flutist and conductor Orlando Cela serves as Assistant Professor at Berklee College of Music and teaches world music at Middlesex Community College. He leads the Arlington Philharmonic Orchestra as Music Director and conducts the Governor’s School of North Carolina orchestra, having premiered over 100 contemporary works globally from Berlin’s Zentrum Danziger to Beijing’s Dulwich College.
His educational journey includes an undergraduate degree from DePauw University and dual master’s degrees in flute and conducting from New England Conservatory. Mentored by Paula Robison and Glenn Michael Egner, he studied in masterclasses with Trevor Wye and Raymond Guiot.
Cela’s creative work centers on expanding flute repertoire through avant-garde performance and educational innovation. Founder of FluteLab, he produces video resources demystifying extended techniques for composers. His arrangements for the Willow Flute Ensemble span Baroque to contemporary world music, featured on the 'World Winds' album. Performance highlights include Sciarrino premieres at UC Berkeley’s Center for New Music and collaborations with tabla virtuoso Samir Chatterjee.
His conducting awards include second place in the Ernst Bacon Memorial Award and London Classical Soloists Competition. Notable projects encompass launching Ningbo University’s orchestral department and conducting the Ningbo City Symphony Orchestra’s inaugural concert.
As an educator, Cela presents dynamic workshops at institutions worldwide—from Tulane University to Stuttgart’s State University of Music—focusing on audience engagement strategies. His studio cultivates performers capable of interpreting complex scores while connecting music to broader human experiences.
Cela’s FluteLab initiative exemplifies his commitment to artistic innovation, providing open-access technical guidance that has influenced composers across five continents. Current projects include developing cross-cultural flute-shen collaborations and premiering works by Ashley Fure with major orchestras.
