Dr. Oliver Clackson Bonnington is a Senior Lecturer in Public Health at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), part of the College of Health, Science and Society. He holds a PhD and BA in Sociology/Geography from UCL and King’s College London (KCL), and is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).
Previously, he served as Assistant Professor at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) from 2013–2023, and conducted PhD research at KCL’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience under the NIHR-funded SAPPHIRE Programme, focusing on mental illness-related stigma.
His research expertise spans sociological perspectives on health, mental health policy, qualitative methodologies, and structural determinants of health. He currently co-leads a NIHR-funded project ('West of England collaboration to prioritise local mental health research') engaging stakeholders including service users, providers, and policymakers to address mental health needs in the region.
Teaching roles include Module Lead for 'Introduction to Health Promotion' and End Point Assessment on UWE’s BSc Public Health Practitioner Degree (Apprenticeship), plus supervision of MSc Public Health dissertations and contributions to qualitative research modules.
Awards include the NIHR Mental Health Development Award (2024–2025).
