Janet Ige

Dr Janet Ige is a Senior Lecturer in Public Health at the University of the West of England (UWE), part of the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences (HAS). She specializes in public health research focusing on physical activity promotion among socio-economically disadvantaged groups, the built environment's impact on health, and non-communicable diseases. Her doctoral research explored barriers to physical activity among the Somali population in Bristol, and she has contributed to major projects like the Wellcome Trust-funded UPSTREAM initiative and Public Health England's Healthy People Healthy Places evidence tool.

Janet holds qualifications including a PhD, BSc, MScPH, and FHEA (Fellow of the Higher Education Academy). Her teaching includes epidemiology and evidence synthesis on UWE's BSc Public Health Degree Apprenticeship and MSc Public Health programs. She has led modules such as Health Protection and co-programmed the BSc Public Health Degree Apprenticeship until 2023, transitioning to a stronger research focus.

Her research employs systematic reviews, meta-analysis, and mixed-methods approaches, addressing topics like extreme heat's health impacts, urban development barriers to health, and spatial planning integration with health evidence. Janet has published extensively in journals like Cities and Health, Journal of Urban Health, and Science of the Total Environment, with a focus on transdisciplinary methodologies.

Her work emphasizes translating research into practice, collaborating with planners, policymakers, and public health practitioners. Recognition includes inclusion in UWE's Celebrating Excellence booklet (2021–2022 editions) and NIHR reviewer status. She remains active in supervising Master's students and pastoral academic support.
