Oli Cunningham

Oli Cunningham is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture at Sheffield Hallam University, affiliated with the Sheffield Creative Industries Institute and the College of Social Sciences and Arts. With over 25 years of combined teaching and architectural practice experience, he specializes in architecture education and design across scales, from product design to large-scale urban masterplans. He joined Sheffield Hallam in 2016 and teaches on the BArch and MArch courses.

His architectural practice spans projects such as the RIBA Stirling Prize-winning Hastings Pier redevelopment and the 2012 Athletes Village in London. Cunningham has held roles as an Associate at dRMM Architects and a Visiting Design Fellow at the University of Sheffield. His research interests emphasize the intersection of practical, technological, and theoretical aspects of design, reflecting his hands-on approach to both education and professional practice.

Award highlights include the 2017 RIBA Stirling Prize for Hastings Pier, multiple RIBA Awards, and recognition for sustainable designs like the Gifford HQ office refurbishment. His work frequently explores themes of urban renewal, historic preservation, and sustainable architecture. Cunningham has also served on prestigious juries, including the 2024 RIBA Bronze Medal panel.
