Oleg Smirnov is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Stony Brook University, where he also serves as Director of Graduate Studies. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Oregon and a M.A. in Economics from the same institution. His research focuses on behavioral political economy, computational modeling, and the social impacts of climate change. He has collaborated with scholars like Leonie Huddy on topics such as public perception of terrorism. His work employs methods including agent-based modeling, evolutionary dynamics, and survey research.
Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses on World Politics and Politics of Climate Change, alongside graduate courses on Cooperation and Computational Modeling. His research explores intersections of climate policy, social dilemmas, and artificial intelligence ethics. He has published extensively on topics ranging from cooperative behavior evolution to climate migration under policy scenarios. Key publications include analyses of U.S. climate policy withdrawal impacts and pandemic cooperation challenges.
Smirnov directs the Political Psychology Lab and Behavioral Political Economy Lab at Stony Brook. His research has been featured in journals like Journal of Conflict Resolution and Global Environmental Change. He actively engages with data-driven approaches to address complex societal problems, including environmental migration and finite worry capacity during crises.
