Noël Carroll is a Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Film & Media Cultures at The Graduate Center, CUNY. He holds dual Ph.D.s in Philosophy from the University of Illinois at Chicago and Cinema Studies from New York University, alongside earlier degrees from Hofstra University and the University of Pittsburgh. Recognized as a leading figure in aesthetics and film philosophy, his work bridges academic philosophy with analyses of popular culture, film, literature, and visual arts.
His research explores narrative theory, the philosophy of film, and the intersection of art with social and cultural contexts. Major publications include Minerva’s Night Out, Art in Three Dimensions, and Philosophy in the Twilight Zone. He has also authored documentary films and over 200 academic articles.
Carroll has held leadership roles, including presidency of the American Society for Aesthetics, and received the 2002 Guggenheim Fellowship. His contributions were further acknowledged with election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2025. He has been a regular contributor to art criticism in outlets like Artforum and the Village Voice.
