William Carroll, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Alberta. His research focuses on modern and contemporary Japanese culture, with particular expertise in East Asian cinema, visual arts, and media studies. He teaches courses on Japanese popular culture, video games, and translation studies. His work bridges film theory, cultural history, and transnational media analysis, emphasizing themes like historical trauma, urban space, and directorial auteurism.
Carroll's courses include EASIA 260: Popular Culture and Contemporary Japanese Society, EASIA 343: Video Games and Japanese Culture, and JAPAN 439: Practical Translation. He has published widely on topics such as Suzuki Seijun's filmography, transnational East Asian cinema, and horror culture. His recent works explore neon aesthetics in Nikkatsu action films and the intersection of fear and historical trauma in Korean horror cinema.
Carroll holds a PhD and is affiliated with the Faculty of Arts. His academic contributions include critical essays on East Asian media forms and their sociocultural contexts. He is currently based at Pembina Hall, University of Alberta.
