Professor Daniel Johnson is a scholar of Japanese and East Asian media at the College of William & Mary, holding a PhD from the University of Chicago's joint program in Asian Cinema. He joined the faculty in 2022 and teaches courses on media studies, Japanese language, and cultural history. His research explores intersections between media technologies, language, and society, with a focus on video games, animation, and television in Japan and East Asia.
Education: PhD in Asian Cinema (University of Chicago). Key publications include Textual Cacophony: Online Video and Anonymity in Japan (Cornell UP, 2023). Current research projects include a book on 1990s Japanese video games and a study of 1980s television in Japan and South Korea.
Research interests span media convergence, dubbing practices, digital media theory, and the cultural role of video games. He advises student projects on topics such as Korean music video criticism, East Asian internet media debates, and East Asian documentary film.
