Steven Brown

Steven Brown is a Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Oregon, affiliated with the Schnitzer School of Global Studies and Languages. His research spans posthumanism, horror cinema, Surrealist film, sound design, Japanese popular culture, and critical theory. He has authored and edited influential books on Japanese visual culture, including Japanese Horror and the Transnational Cinema of Sensations and Cinema Anime.

Prof. Brown's scholarship focuses on transnational intersections in Japanese cinema and visual culture. His work analyzes the posthuman implications of anime, manga, and cyberpunk narratives, while interrogating gender identity, biopolitics, and technological uncanny in media. He has pioneered studies on sound design in J-horror and the global influence of Japanese cultural production.

His publications chart trends in transnational cinema, posthumanism, and critical theory, with articles in journals like Mechademia, Horror Studies, and Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies. He has also contributed to interdisciplinary dialogues on Nietzsche, digital humanities, and Japanese performance history.
