Nolan Miller is the Daniel and Cynthia Mah Helle Professor of Finance and Director of the Center for Business and Public Policy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He holds a PhD in Managerial Economics and Decision Sciences from Northwestern University (1999) and B.A./B.S. degrees in Philosophy and Economics from the University of Pennsylvania (1994). He previously served at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government as Associate and Assistant Professor of Public Policy (2004-2009).
His research focuses on the economics of information and incentives, particularly in healthcare, environmental policy, development economics, and industrial organization. Notable projects include analyzing the health impacts of temperature and air pollution on elderly populations, supported by a National Institute on Aging grant, and studying disability insurance trends during economic recessions. He also explores consumer behavior in developing economies, such as Giffen behavior and price subsidies' effects on nutrition.
Miller is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and has authored studies in top journals like the American Economic Review, Review of Economics and Statistics, and Journal of Health Economics. His teaching includes courses on microeconomics, market fundamentals, and financial economics.
Current roles include Chair of the Senate Committee on Education Policy (Office of the Provost, UIUC) and leadership in the Center for Business and Public Policy, which bridges academic research and policy impact. His work emphasizes policy-relevant analysis, such as evaluating climate change's economic and health costs and improving healthcare quality through market mechanisms.
