Dr Nicola Kalk is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Department of Addictions at King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, and a Consultant Addiction Psychiatrist at King's College Hospital Addictions Care Team (South London & Maudsley NHS Trust). She holds a MBChB from the University of Cape Town, MSc degrees in Comparative Social Policy (Oxford) and Neuroscience (Oxford), and a PhD in Addiction Psychiatry from Imperial College London funded by the Wellcome Trust GSK Fellowship.
Her research focuses on addiction medicine, neuroinflammation in alcohol dependence, opioid overdose mechanisms, and the impact of smartphone use on youth mental health. She co-leads studies like the BUILD2depot trial on buprenorphine treatment and the ProACTIVE study evaluating Alcohol Care Teams. She is also part of the National Programme on Substance Use Mortality analyzing drug-related deaths.
Key research themes include: opioid overdose prevention, alcohol-liver disease comorbidities, digital health interventions for smartphone addiction, and translational pharmacology in addiction. Over 50 peer-reviewed articles span topics like benzodiazepine toxicity, naloxone dosing protocols, and smartphone usage trends among adolescents. Her work intersects clinical practice, policy, and public health, emphasizing harm reduction strategies and equitable access to care.
