Dr. Clare Mackie is a Lecturer and Research Associate at King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), Department of Addictions Sciences. She joined the IoPPN in 2006 as a Postdoctoral Researcher after working at University College London's Institute of Education. Her doctoral degree was awarded by the University of Warwick.
Her research focuses on adolescent substance misuse, comorbidity with psychological symptoms, and risk mechanisms involving cognitive, behavioral, and genetic factors. She has held interdisciplinary fellowships from the ESRC and MRC, investigating adolescent substance use and mental health epidemiology, particularly psychotic experiences. Her work spans prevention programs in schools, cannabis potency effects, and digital health interventions.
Key research groups include the SUPER group (Substance Use and Psychiatric Epidemiology Research) and the Addictions Drugs Research Group. She teaches prevention strategies for adolescent substance use in the MSc Addiction Studies program.
Recent studies include qualitative research on naloxone dosing for opioid overdoses and mixed-methods analyses on smartphone use impacts on adolescent mental health. She has led projects like the NalPORS cohort study and systematic reviews on medical cannabis substitution. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
Notable awards include the ESRC/MRC Postdoctoral Fellowship. She supervises MSc and PhD students, emphasizing translational research in substance use and mental health.
