Professor Sir John Strang is a leading academic in addiction medicine and psychiatry at King's College London, leading the Addictions Department and the Addictions Clinical Academic Group (CAG) within King's Health Partners Academic Health Science Centre. He holds the Chair in Psychiatry of Addictions and oversees collaborations between King's College London, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, and other NHS institutions.
Education: MBBS (Medical Doctorate), MD (Thesis-Based Higher Degree, University of London), specializing in psychiatry at Guy’s and Maudsley Hospitals. Over 40 years of clinical and academic experience, including 30+ years as a consultant psychiatrist in addictions.
Research focuses on addiction policy, overdose prevention (naloxone/heroin), contingency management, and supervised injecting facilities. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to health. Key achievements include being one of six 'Highly Cited Authors' globally in addictions research and leading influential studies on substance abuse policy.
Scientific Awards: ISI 'Highly Cited Author', Knight Bachelor (Honorary Title).
Grants/Projects: Active grants include CM4COYN (naloxone intervention) and RESCU II (opioid overdose research). Leadership roles in WHO, NICE, and UK government committees.
