Joanne Neale is a Professor of Addictions Qualitative Research at King's College London, based in the National Addiction Centre within the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience. She holds a conjunct professorship at the University of New South Wales, Australia. Her career includes academic roles at the University of Glasgow, University of York, and Oxford Brookes University, where she previously held a Professorship in Public Health.
Her research focuses on qualitative and mixed-methods studies addressing addiction, homelessness, and healthcare policy. Key areas include opioid pharmacotherapies, patient-reported outcome measures, and recovery-oriented interventions. She leads the NIHR Policy Research Unit in Addictions and co-founded the Addiction Service User Group (SURG).
Neale's work emphasizes ethical, patient-centered approaches, including developing apps like SURE Recovery for self-management of substance use disorders. She contributes to teaching qualitative methods, addiction studies, and public health across multiple programs at King's College London.
Her recent research includes evaluating long-acting injectable buprenorphine, naloxone dosing strategies, and cost-effective hospital discharge services for homeless individuals. She has published extensively on addiction, recovery, and healthcare systems, with over 140 peer-reviewed articles and several books.
