Niclas Svensson is an Associate Professor and Head of Unit at Linköping University's Department of Management and Engineering (IEI), part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. He leads the Environmental Technology and Management research division, focusing on environmental systems analysis, biogas innovation, and urban resource management.
His research emphasizes resource-efficient biogas solutions, urban resource flows, and landfill/urban mining. He coordinates the Biogas Research Centre (BRC), where he leads quantitative system studies on biogas's role in a bioeconomy. He has supervised doctoral students in urban mining and landfill mining. His teaching includes courses on Industrial Ecology and Sustainability Engineering, earning him the 'This year’s pedagogue' award (2011).
Key research interests include waste incineration's role in circular economies, industrial symbiosis, and sustainable sub-surface infrastructure. Over 25 years of experience in environmental systems analysis, with a focus on transitioning to sustainable urban and industrial systems.
His publications span biogas lifecycle assessments, CO₂ utilization, and landfill mining economics. He collaborates with public and private sectors to advance sustainable resource systems and policy frameworks.
