Nick Hamilton is a Principal Research Fellow in the Sports Engineering Research Group (SERG) at Sheffield Hallam University, the world's largest sports engineering research centre. He also serves as Innovation Lead for the South Yorkshire Digital Health Hub, focusing on advancing healthcare technologies. With over 25 years in sports consultancy, he has designed products like carbon fibre bikes and gravity sleds. His research emphasizes enhancing athletic performance, accessibility, and safety through innovative design. He leads the Design Engineering Research Theme (DERT), addressing equipment optimization, injury prevention, and user-friendly innovations.
His teaching contributions include MSc programs in Sports Engineering, Computer Simulation of Sports Equipment, and Innovation and Enterprise in Sports Engineering. He actively supervises PhD students, focusing on topics like hamstring injury prediction and wrist disorder management. Notable completed projects include studies on snowboard wrist protectors and football shoe biomechanics.
His research spans sports equipment design, biomechanics, and digital health. Recent work includes studies on wrist protectors' stiffness, Nordic hamstring exercises, and non-traumatic wrist disorders. He collaborates with industry to translate research into real-world applications, such as improving injury prevention technologies.
Hamilton is an avid mountain biker, organizing races and contributing to outdoor sports media. His work bridges academic research, industry innovation, and public engagement in sports and health.
