Gill investigates how spatial and legal barriers affect asylum seekers, focusing on procedural fairness in appeal hearings. His work combines fieldwork with policy advocacy, emphasizing refugee agency and systemic reform in European migration governance. He critiques the 'asylum lottery' through ethnographic perspectives on case officers' roles.
His publications, including the 2024 book 'Inside Asylum Appeals', reveal consistent trends: exposing power imbalances in asylum procedures and advocating for participatory justice. This body of work bridges geography, law, and human rights to challenge dehumanizing practices.
Scientific recognition includes:
- British Academy mid-career fellowship (2025-26)
Gill has secured major funding from the Nuffield Foundation, ESRC, and ERC for the ASYFAIR project. He actively shapes policy via City of Sanctuary, JUSTICE, and EUAA collaborations, while serving as external examiner for Oxford and Swansea universities. His advisory impact extends to legal reforms and 'Universities of Sanctuary' initiatives.
He leads the ASYFAIR team in conducting cross-European ethnographic research on asylum appeals, driving evidence-based advocacy for refugee rights and procedural dignity.
