Professor Guy Goodwin-Gill is an Honorary Professor of Law at UNSW and Deputy Director of the Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law. He holds Emeritus positions at the University of Oxford (Emeritus Professor of International Refugee Law and Emeritus Fellow of All Souls College). Previously, he practiced as a barrister at Blackstone Chambers in London (2001–2018), specializing in public international law, human rights, citizenship, and refugee law. He has advised UNHCR and represented refugees in high-profile cases before the European Court of Human Rights and International Court of Justice.
Education: BA (Honours), MA, and PhD from the University of Oxford.
Research focuses on international refugee law, human rights law, humanitarian law, and free/fair elections. His work addresses challenges such as non-refoulement, statelessness, and refugee protection frameworks. Recent articles analyze UK asylum cases, regional compacts, and the role of UNHCR in shaping refugee law. He received the 2020 Stefan A. Riesenfeld Memorial Award for contributions to refugee law.
Contributions include founding the International Journal of Refugee Law, advising on UNHCR policies, and leading global initiatives on migration and displacement. His expertise bridges academia, legal practice, and policy advocacy.
