Mark Symes is a highly regarded barrister specializing in immigration, asylum, and human rights law, with a concurrent academic affiliation as a Visiting Fellow at the Refugee Law Initiative, School of Advanced Study, University of London. He practices at Garden Court Chambers where he has been recognized as a Band 1 immigration lawyer in both Chambers UK and Legal 500 directories for multiple consecutive years.
His research interests focus on asylum and refugee law, with particular expertise in the European dimension of international protection, arguments based on the Qualification, Procedures and Reception Directives, and the Charter of Fundamental Rights. He has extensive experience representing clients in courts from the Tribunal to the Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights.
His publications include the influential Asylum Law and Practice (co-authored with Peter Jorro), which has been described as "encyclopaedic in its coverage ... pre-eminent" by Lord Brown and "indispensable in advocacy work for refugees and human rights" by Professor Guy Goodwin-Gill. He also serves as Principal legal consultant to the Electronic Immigration Network and Consultant Editor of the Immigration and Nationality Law Reports.

As an educator, Mark is a co-founder of HJT Training, providing specialized immigration law training to UNHCR, Liberty, Legal Services Commission, and numerous UK immigration solicitors' firms. He has trained judges of the Refugee Appeals Tribunal of Ireland and legal staff of UK Immigration Tribunals. His recent work has included significant cases challenging the UK's Rwanda asylum policy, certification of Albania as a safe country, and the Home Office's power to revisit mistaken immigration status grants.
