Dr. William McCready is an Associate Professor of Law at the School of Law, Politics and Sociology, University of Sussex. He specializes in Immigration & Asylum Law, Human Rights Law, and International Criminal Law. As Deputy Director of Sussex Clinical Legal Education, he leads the Migration Law Clinic and supervises the Human Rights Law Clinic, offering free legal advice to NGOs and marginalized communities.
Before joining Sussex in 2018, he practiced as a Barrister at Garden Court North Chambers, specializing in Immigration & Asylum Law. He holds a PhD from the University of Bristol (2015), focusing on State jurisdictional immunities in human rights cases. His work included assisting the Extraordinary Chambers of the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) during trials of Khmer Rouge leaders.
Research & Teaching: Teaches courses on International Crimes, Human Trafficking, Clinical Legal Education, and Public Law. Research interests include transnational criminal law, migration governance, and the intersection of public international law with human rights advocacy.
Labs/Teams: Leads Migration Law Clinic and collaborates with Human Rights Law Clinic, providing practical legal training and service delivery to asylum seekers and NGOs.
