Nick Gilbert is a Professor at the Institute of Genetics and Cancer, University of Edinburgh, where he holds a Personal Chair of Chromatin Biology. He leads research projects at the MRC Human Genetics Unit, focusing on chromatin structure, DNA topology, and genome stability.
- Academic Qualifications: PhD in Chromatin Biology, University of Edinburgh (2000); BSc Biochemistry (1st Class), University of Edinburgh (1995)
Research Interests: His work investigates how chromatin folding regulates gene transcription, DNA replication, and repair. Key areas include DNA supercoiling, common fragile sites in cancer genomes, and development of novel chromatin structure probes through collaborations with chemistry/engineering departments.
Publication Trends: Recent studies focus on chromatin phase separation, 3D genome architecture, and the interplay between DNA topology and transcriptional noise. Collaborative work spans molecular biology, biophysics, and computational modeling.
- Scientific Awards:
- Wellcome Trust Career Development Fellowship (2006-2010)
- MRC Senior Fellowship (2012-present)
- Key Responsibilities:
- Director of Graduate Research and Training, Institute of Genetics and Cancer
- Principal Investigator in multiple projects including SARS-CoV-2 antibody development and mitotic chromosome folding
