Nathaniel Underwood

Nathaniel Underwood is an Assistant Professor of Illustration at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte), where he teaches courses in illustration and figurative painting. Previously, he held academic roles including Professor at Savannah College of Art and Design (2022–2023) and Adjunct Professor at Columbus College of Art and Design (2006–2012). His professional background includes 15 years as a commercial illustrator for major brands like AAA Auto Insurance, Burger King, and Bed Bath & Beyond, alongside freelance visual development work.

He holds a BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design (2002) and an MFA in Painting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (2006). Underwood’s artistic practice emphasizes observational techniques, focusing on interior scenes, urban landscapes, and figurative work. His fine art is exhibited internationally, including at Sharon Weiss Gallery and Bynd Artisan, with collections in institutions like the Weaver Foundation and Ohio University Eastern.

Underwood’s creative philosophy centers on capturing 'the miraculous within the banal,' prioritizing objective observation and material experimentation. He organizes the Open Figure Painting Sessions at the Ohio Art League and has been recognized for teaching excellence (2008 nomination at CCAD).
