Nathaniel Elberfeld is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He is a designer and co-founder of Teltta, a research and computational design collective that explores systems of production, material knowledge, and labor forces in architecture and design.
Elberfeld’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums such as the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis and Design Seaport in Boston, Massachusetts. His academic background includes a B.S. in Physics from the College of William & Mary, an M.Arch from Washington University in St. Louis, and a Master of Science in Design & Computation from MIT.
His research focuses on integrating computational design into architectural epistemologies, with recent projects like House for Three Households exploring shared living spaces and material efficiency. He also investigates textile-based fabrication techniques, such as lacemaking, as alternatives to industrial knitting in architectural design.
Elberfeld has taught undergraduate and graduate design studios, computational design seminars, and architectural theory at Washington University in St. Louis and the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design at the University of Arkansas. At UNC Charlotte, his courses continue to emphasize computation in design practices.
