Nathan Grubaugh is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology (Microbial Diseases) at the Yale School of Public Health and a secondary faculty member in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at Yale University. His research focuses on genomic epidemiology, molecular evolution, and surveillance of mosquito- and tick-borne viruses, including dengue, West Nile, Powassan, and SARS-CoV-2.
Dr. Grubaugh earned his BS in Biomedical Sciences from Western Michigan University (2005), MS in Biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University (2011), and PhD in Microbiology from Colorado State University (2016). He completed postdoctoral work at The Scripps Research Institute (2018) studying the Zika virus epidemic.
Research highlights include developing genomic tools for dengue surveillance (NIH DP2 award), leading the Yale SARS-CoV-2 Genomic Surveillance Initiative, and co-founding the Pathogen Genomics Centers of Excellence with partners like the Broad Institute. His lab employs multidisciplinary approaches combining molecular biology, statistics, and computational modeling to address outbreak dynamics.
Scientific Awards:
- NIH New Innovator Award (DP2AI176740, 2022)
His work has driven innovations in SalivaDirect testing, amplicon-based sequencing protocols, and open-science frameworks. Collaborations span institutions in the U.S., Brazil, and the Caribbean, with over 65 joint publications.
