Dr. Natasha Dowey is an Associate Professor in Sustainable Geoscience and Volcanology at the School of Engineering and Built Environment, Sheffield Hallam University. She leads the BSc Environmental Science and Climate, Sustainability and Environmental Management programs. Her research focuses on volcanic hazards, sustainability in geoscience, and equity/diversity initiatives. She holds a BSc from Aberystwyth University, an MPhil in Volcanic Geochemistry, a PhD from the University of Liverpool, and a PGCert in Academic Practice.
Education:
- BSc (Hons) Environmental Earth Science, Aberystwyth University
- MPhil Earth Sciences (Volcanic Geochemistry), Aberystwyth University
- PhD Earth Sciences (Explosive Volcanic Hazards), University of Liverpool (2012)
- PGCert Academic Practice, University of Hull (2021)
Research Interests: Dr. Dowey investigates pyroclastic density currents, volcanic hazard communication, and promoting diversity in geoscience. She leads projects like the Equator Initiative to improve equity in postgraduate research and decolonizes geoscience curricula. Her work also addresses sustainability in geoscience education and public outreach through initiatives like Geoscience for the Future.
Publications: Her recent work spans volcanic processes, equity strategies, and decolonization, with a focus on translating complex data into actionable insights for sustainable practices and inclusive education systems.
Awards:
- 2022: Geological Society Coke Medal for contributions to geoscience
- Charter Trustee, Geology for Global Development
- Council Member, Geological Society of London
Grants & Advising: She supervises PhD and MSc students in volcanology and geoscience equity. Key projects include the NERC-funded Equator Project and collaborations on pyroclastic flow dynamics in Santorini and experimental laboratory setups.
Labs/Teams: Active in the Sheffield Hallam geoscience research group and collaborates with international networks on volcanic hazard modeling and educational reform.
