Natalie Steele Royston is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of Music Education at Iowa State University, where she teaches courses and oversees practicum and student teacher placements. She has held leadership roles with the Iowa State bands, including Director of the Cyclone Marching Band and conductor of the Concert Band. Previously, she served as Associate Director of Bands at Abilene Christian University and taught in Ohio public schools for six years. Dr. Royston holds a BM in Music Education (1994), two MA degrees in Trombone Performance and Wind Conducting (1996, 1997) from Ohio University, and a PhD in Music Education from the University of North Texas (2009).
Her research focuses on music teacher education, ensemble dynamics, and student preparedness for collegiate music programs. She explores topics like admissions criteria, curricular revision, and the mental health of music educators post-pandemic. Her work also addresses applied studio faculty perspectives and the relationship between teacher behavior and student efficacy.
Dr. Royston’s publications appear in journals such as Journal of Research in Music Education and Update: Applications of Research in Music Education. She actively presents at national conferences and has authored guides for prospective music majors. Notable recognitions include inclusion in Who's Who Among America's Teachers and memberships in prestigious academic honor societies like Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Kappa Lambda.
In advising and professional service, she has supervised student teacher placements and led ensembles in competitive environments. Her leadership extends to multiple music educators’ associations across Iowa, Ohio, and Texas. She continues to advocate for robust music education programs and student readiness through her research and clinical work.
