Natalie Dean is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics and Department of Epidemiology at Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health. She co-directs the Emory Alliance for Vaccine Epidemiology (EAVE) and the Summer Institute in Statistics and Modeling in Infectious Diseases (SISMID). Her research focuses on methodological approaches to evaluate interventions for emerging infectious diseases, including vaccines and observational study designs like the test-negative design. She has contributed to high-impact work on Ebola, Zika, HIV, and most recently, SARS-CoV-2.
Dean holds a BA from Boston University, an AM from Harvard University, and a PhD in Biostatistics from Harvard University. She has led or co-led major initiatives such as the CDC-funded Emory Center for Infectious Disease Modeling and Analytics Training Hub (CIDMATH). Her work bridges statistical methodology, public health practice, and global health challenges.
Her research interests include vaccine efficacy trials, outbreak response strategies, and the communication of scientific findings to policy makers. She has authored influential commentaries on topics ranging from pandemic preparedness to vaccine trial design.
Notable scientific awards include the 2024 Communications Award (Joint Policy Board of Mathematics) and the 2020 Provost's Excellence Award. Her research has been published in high-impact journals like Science, Nature, and Lancet Infectious Diseases.
