Natalie A Cameron, MD, MPH, is an Instructor in the Department of Preventive Medicine (Epidemiology) and the Department of Medicine (General Internal Medicine) at the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. Her research focuses on cardiovascular epidemiology with emphasis on women's health, maternal outcomes, and health disparities across diverse populations.
Dr. Cameron earned her BA from Harvard University (2011), MD from the University of California San Diego (2018), and MPH from Northwestern University (2023). Her clinical training includes an Internal Medicine residency at McGaw Medicine Center of Northwestern University (2021) and a General Medicine Research Fellowship at Northwestern University (2023). She maintains board certification in Internal Medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Her research program investigates how prepregnancy cardiovascular health influences gestational diabetes and long-term cardiovascular outcomes, while examining socioeconomic drivers of racial disparities in maternal heart health. She employs large cohort studies to identify critical windows for cardiovascular disease prevention across the lifecourse, particularly focusing on women and minority populations. Her work bridges epidemiological research with clinical prevention strategies to address inequities in cardiovascular outcomes.
Analysis of Dr. Cameron's 2025 publications reveals a cohesive research trajectory in cardiovascular epidemiology, characterized by three interconnected themes: maternal cardiovascular health across the reproductive lifespan, racial/ethnic disparities in hypertension and cardiometabolic outcomes, and early-life determinants of lifelong cardiovascular risk. Her work consistently leverages longitudinal cohort data to translate epidemiological findings into actionable prevention frameworks.
Dr. Cameron's distinguished contributions have been recognized through numerous awards:
- Trudy Bush Fellowship for Cardiovascular Disease Research in Women’s Health, American Heart Association (2023)
- Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society Inductee (2023)
- Jeremiah and Rose Stamler Research Award for New Investigators, American Heart Association (2022)
- Scott Grundy Award for Excellence in Metabolism Research, American Heart Association (2021)
- American Heart Association Top Heart Disease and Stroke Research Advances of 2020
- Outstanding Resident Teacher Award, Northwestern Medicine (2019)
Her research is supported by competitive funding from the American Heart Association (Trudy Bush Fellowship, Jeremiah and Rose Stamler Award) and Northwestern University (J Larry Jameson Research Award). Dr. Cameron actively contributes to medical education through teaching awards and serves on national committees including the American Heart Association Early Career Committee and SGIM Women and Medicine Commission.
