Salim S. Virani, M.D., Ph.D., is a tenured Professor in the Sections of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Research at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. He also serves as an investigator at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Health Services Research and Development Center. Clinically, he specializes in Preventive Cardiology at Baylor and the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, focusing on complex dyslipidemia management. He directs the Baylor Cardiology Fellowship Program and co-directs the VA Advanced Health Services Research Fellowship.
Dr. Virani earned his medical degree from Aga Khan University (Karachi, Pakistan) and completed residency at the University of Miami and cardiology fellowship at Baylor/Texas Heart Institute. His research focuses on atherosclerosis epidemiology, guideline adherence, and healthcare delivery innovations, particularly in low-resource settings. He has authored over 500 peer-reviewed publications and serves leadership roles in the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, and World Heart Federation.
Awards include the Scott Grundy Award, Jeremiah Stamler Award, and induction into the Best Doctors® Database. He chairs the ACC’s Prevention Council and Global NCD Academy, and has contributed to national and international clinical guidelines on cholesterol management and cardiovascular prevention.
