Nasir Sohail is a Research Fellow in Algebra at the University of Tartu's Institute of Mathematics and Statistics, part of the Faculty of Science and Technology. His current position began in June 2021 and is expected to continue until 2025. Previously, he held teaching-focused roles at Canadian institutions including Wilfrid Laurier University and Cape Breton University from 2015 to 2021. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Tartu from 2011–2014 and earned his PhD in Mathematics from Quaid-i-Azam University in 2011, with co-supervision from Wilfrid Laurier University.
Education: PhD in Mathematics (2011, Quaid-i-Azam University); MSc in Mathematics (1992). His research focuses on semigroup theory, ordered algebraic structures, number theory, and group theory. He has been a reviewer for Mathematical Reviews and ZbMath, and contributed to proofreading conference proceedings.
Research interests include epimorphisms in ordered algebras, amalgamation properties, and dominion theory. His work bridges algebraic structures with categorical methods, emphasizing applications in semigroups and monoids. Recent contributions explore inverse semigroups, lax epimorphisms, and Hamiltonian ordered algebras.
Award highlights include the Estonian Science Foundation’s MOBILITAS grant (2011) and HEC Pakistan’s IRSIP fellowship (2008). He collaborates internationally, including visits to the University of Manchester (2024), University of York (2023), and Instituto Superior Técnico (2016). Supervision includes guiding bachelor’s theses at Tartu and mentoring undergraduate researchers like Kislay Roy (2017).
Teaching experience spans calculus, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics across multiple institutions. Current projects include the Estonian Science Foundation-funded 'Morita Theory of Semigroups and Other Structures' (PRG1204).
