Professor Nancy Preston is a Professor of Supportive and Palliative Care at Lancaster University, serving as Co-Director of the International Observatory on End-of-Life Care and Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Health and Medicine. Her research focuses on integrating palliative care into healthcare systems, including oncology, respiratory units, ICUs, and care homes. She leads European studies like InSup-C and Pal-cycles to improve palliative care delivery and has contributed to policy through her involvement with the NIHR/Department of Health Policy Research Unit. Her work also explores end-of-life decision-making, advance care planning, and assisted dying, with notable presentations to British and Irish parliamentary committees. She co-edits BMC Palliative Care and authored influential textbooks on systematic reviews and palliative care nursing. Her current projects include the CovPall study on pandemic impacts and the PalCaRE-NWC partnership to build regional palliative care research capacity.
Her research interests span palliative care integration across diverse healthcare settings, socioeconomic disparities in care access, and ethical dilemmas in end-of-life care. She has supervised numerous PhD students, blending traditional and online programs in palliative care. Dr. Preston’s interdisciplinary approach includes developing MOOCs and digital tools to disseminate research into clinical practice.
