Professor Catherine Walshe is a Professor of Palliative Care and Co-Director of the International Observatory on End of Life Care at Lancaster University's Division of Health Research. She holds a leadership role as Editor-in-Chief of the journal *Palliative Medicine*, a premier interdisciplinary publication in the field. Her research focuses on improving palliative care delivery in primary/community settings, symptom management at end of life, and advancing research methods in end-of-life care. Current projects include Horizon Europe-funded initiatives addressing COPD and dementia care, as well as NIHR-funded programs such as the Palliative and End of Life Care Policy Research Unit.
Her teaching includes leading the internationally recognized PhD in Palliative Care program, where she serves as Admissions Tutor. She actively supervises PhD students in areas like palliative care provision in care homes and volunteer roles. Key collaborations span pan-European consortia, including projects with Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and University College Cork.
Research interests emphasize building evidence-based practices, particularly for vulnerable populations such as those with advanced dementia or cancer. Notable contributions include the mySUPPORT care booklet initiative for nursing homes and CovPall, analyzing pandemic responses in palliative care. She also explores digital health interventions and telehealth solutions for emotional support in palliative care settings.
Professional recognition includes her fellowship with the Queens Institute of Community Nursing. Her work bridges clinical practice and academia, with a focus on translating research into policy and clinical practice improvements. Ongoing projects aim to strengthen palliative care networks and address gaps in service provision across healthcare systems.
