Katherine Sleeman is a Professor and holder of the Isobel Laing Michal Galazka Chair in Palliative Care at the Cicely Saunders Institute of Palliative Care, Policy & Rehabilitation at King's College London. She trained in medicine at UCL (MBBS 1999) and completed a PhD at the Institute of Cancer Research on breast cancer stem cells. Her academic roles include NIHR Clinician Scientist Fellowship (2016-2021) and NIHR clinical lectureship (2010). Her research focuses on leveraging routinely collected healthcare data to improve end-of-life care and inform policy. Key projects include policy analysis for the WHO/WISH Foundation, evaluating palliative care needs in Chile, and addressing disparities in care home provision.
Education: MBBS with first-class honors in Developmental Biology (UCL, 1996), PhD in Cancer Biology (2000s). Specialization in palliative medicine since 2007. Research interests include transitions in end-of-life care settings, evidence-based policy, and pandemic impacts on palliative care (e.g., CovPall studies).
Current roles include leading the Impact Centre for Palliative and End of Life Care (Kirby Laing Foundation-funded) and co-investigator on projects like DUE_Care (Marie Curie) and EMPOWER (ESRC). Her work aligns with UN SDGs related to health equity and sustainable development.
