Nancy A. Naples is the Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Connecticut, Storrs. She also serves as Advisor for the Feminist Studies Graduate Certificate within the WGSS department. Naples holds a PhD in Sociology from CUNY Graduate Center (1988) and an MSW from CUNY Hunter College (1979).
Her research focuses on three interconnected areas: 1) the impact of global economic and political structures on marginalized groups, 2) community activism and feminist praxis, and 3) sexual citizenship. She employs ethnography, discourse analysis, and comparative methods to examine welfare policies, immigration, rural development, and grassroots organizing. Her teaching spans feminist theory, qualitative methodology, gender and science, and feminist pedagogies.
Naples has received numerous accolades, including the 2011 Excellence in Research Award for Social Sciences and multiple leadership roles in professional organizations such as Sociologists for Women in Society and the Society for the Study of Social Problems. She has authored/edited over 8 major works, with recent contributions focusing on intersectionality and transnational activism.
