Lynn S. Chancer

Lynn S. Chancer is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at Hunter College, part of the City University of New York (CUNY). Her work spans social theory, criminology, and feminist studies. She holds a PhD in Sociology from CUNY's Graduate Center (1989) and a BA in History from Princeton University (1978).

Her research explores intersections of gender, race, class, and power, with notable contributions to feminist debates on sexuality, deviance, and psychoanalytic sociology. Key works include Reconcilable Differences (1998), which earned an American Sociological Association award, and The Unhappy Divorce of Sociology and Psychoanalysis (2014), co-edited with John Andrews.

Chancer has organized conferences on psychosocial studies through the American Sociological Association and Eastern Sociological Society, and guest-edited special issues for Theoretical Criminology and Feminist Criminology. She teaches at undergraduate, master's, and PhD levels, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches.
