Andrew Karmen is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, part of the City University of New York (CUNY). He has been affiliated with John Jay since 1978 and holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Columbia University (1977), along with degrees from The City College of New York (BS Geology, 1966; MA Sociology, 1970) and an MS in Geology from the University of Rochester (1968). His research focuses on victimology, criminal justice policies, and crime analysis, with particular attention to victims’ rights, policing strategies, and societal impacts of crime.
Dr. Karmen is the author of seminal works including Crime Victims: An Introduction to Victimology (9th Ed., 2015) and New York Murder Mystery (2000), which critically examined New York City’s crime decline. His scholarly output spans journal articles, book chapters, and edited volumes on topics such as police use of force, gender-based victimization, and zero-tolerance policies. He has also contributed to policy debates through analyses of NYPD performance and victims’ rights advocacy.
His teaching portfolio includes undergraduate and graduate courses in criminal justice, criminology, research methods, and social issues. He has mentored students across disciplines and maintains an active presence in academic conferences, presenting on themes like terrorism, crime trends, and justice system accountability.
