Mustafa Tosur, MD, FAAP, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, with affiliations at Texas Children's Hospital and the Children's Nutrition Research Center (USDA/ARS). His research focuses on pediatric diabetes heterogeneity, particularly the roles of race/ethnicity, genetics, micronutrients, and metabolic disturbances. He holds board certifications in Pediatrics and Pediatric Endocrinology.
- Education:
- MD from Hacettepe University (Ankara, Turkey)
- Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine (2018)
- Residency and Internship at University of Texas Medical Branch (2013–2015)
His research emphasizes precision medicine in diabetes, including genetic risk scores, MODY detection, and arginine metabolism in type 2 diabetes. Recent studies highlight ethnic disparities in diabetes progression and the diagnostic challenges of diabetes subtypes in youth.
Publications reflect a focus on diabetes classification, genetic influences on beta-cell function, and metabolic profiling. Awards include the ADA Young Investigator Travel Award (2017) and the ENDO 2014 Outstanding Abstract Award.
- Grants:
- NIH-NIDDK K23 Grant (Principal Investigator): Investigating arginine metabolism in pediatric type 2 diabetes
- Dompe Pharmaceuticals Phase 3 trial: Ladarixin for type 1 diabetes
- NIH-funded TrialNet and RADIANT studies (Co-Investigator)
Tosur leads efforts to enhance underrepresented group participation in diabetes research and advocates for improved diabetes type diagnosis accuracy in pediatrics.
